Don’t forget directors
As you would imagine, the vast majority of searches on LocateTV are for when a specific TV programme, film or actor is next showing on TV, online and on DVD.
However, there are times when searching for content by director is a better bet. This is pretty common for someone like Hitchcock or Scorsese, famous directors with a very recognisable style who have become a genre unto themselves. Being in the mood for a ‘Woody Allen’ is very different to being in the mood for any generic ‘comedy’; a time when a director search on LocateTV would be a real help.
However, it can be even more interesting to browse the oeuvre of less well-known auteurs. Did you know that the director of that 1989 canine classic Turner and Hooch, Roger Spottiswoode, also made Tomorrow Never Dies? Or that Todd Haynes directed both retro classics Velvet Goldmine and Far From Heaven? Having recently seen and loved Perfume, I used LocateTV to discover that director Tom Tykwer also wrote and directed Run Lola Run, which is showing on TG4 tomorrow. Unsociable Friday night in duly booked.
Other fascinating crew-related searches include finding out which well-known actors have also been involved in production. It’s not surprising that Vince Vaughn was scriptwriter and producer as well as star of last year’s The Break Up. Jennifer Aniston obviously has an eye for multi-talented men.
Anyone else made some interesting or surprising discoveries of this kind in their searches on LocateTV? I’m using it to plan my own Cronenberg season this month. It’s time for something a bit dark and twisted.
